The Opportunity: Drive Transformational Growth in a Critical Mission
Meals on Wheels of Durham (MOWD) is celebrating 50 years of service, having delivered over 1.6 million meals to nearly 6,000 seniors in need since 2012. Our model is "More Than a Meal®”, focusing on nutrition, safety, and social connection for Durham County’s most vulnerable population. With the 60+ population in Durham County projected to grow by 49% by 2042, the need for our services is urgent and expanding.
Meals on Wheels Durham is seeking a Director of Development to be a stabilizing and strategic leader who will implement data-driven decision making and refine existing systems to achieve long-term stability and growth. This is an opportunity to build on a history of success, which includes securing the organization's largest-ever single grant (over $200K), and shape the future expansion of MOWD’s services.
Core Responsibilities and Deliverables
The Director of Development will report to the Executive Director and be responsible for the overall design, implementation, and management of a diversified, multi-year fundraising program.
- Fundraising Strategy and Execution: Create and manage a development plan to achieve and exceed the budgeted goal of $1.8 Million. Lead the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors, institutional funders, and fundraising events.
- Pipeline Development: In the first year, success will be measured by the creation of robust and sustainable fundraising pipeline by increasing donor retention rates, upgrading cycles, and new prospect identification.
- Board Engagement: Act as a strategic though partner to the Executive Director and lead actionable strategies to train and engage the full Board in becoming active fundraising partners and network advocates.
- Data-Driven System Refinement: Ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the donor management system. Utilize data and metrics to analyze donor behavior, forecast revenue, and pinpoint areas of opportunity to drive strategy for institutional funding and grant tracking.
Candidate Profile: What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is a passionate, skilled storyteller and collaborative, innovative, and resilient leader who shares a commitment to MOWD's mission.
- Experience: Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit development, high-level B2B/B2C sales, or a related executive role.
- Track Record: Proven ability to build and manage a robust relationship pipeline, translating into successful solicitation of five-figure gifts or equivalent high-value commercial accounts.
- Skills: Proficient in Data Analysis and CRM Management is essential. Possesses strong business acumen, high social-emotional intelligence, integrity, and sound judgement.
- Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Compensation and Location
- Salary Range: Competitive salary in the range of $80,000-$90,000
- Benefits: Generous employee benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance, paid vacations, and an employer-contributing retirement plan.

Board members play a critical role in guiding the strategic direction of the organization, supporting fundraising and community engagement efforts, and serving as ambassadors for Meals on Wheels Durham in the community.
